Werder Bremen talent Philipp Bargfrede surely was hoping for a different debut with the German U21 national team. Though he was in the starting line-up with Werder team-mate Marko Marin Tuesday, Bargfrede could not help lead Germany to a victory at the Lobanowksi tournament in Ukraine. Turkey knocked off Germany 3-1 with goals from Tevfik Köse, Aydin Yilmaz and Deniz Yilmaz. Germany’s lone goal was scored by Werder talent Kevin Schindler, who is currently on loan to Augsburg.
In the game for third place of the four-team tourney – being played in memory of Ukrainian coaching legend Walerij Lobanowski – Germany will face with Iran on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Borodjanka. Iran lost the second semi-final 2-1 against hosts Ukraine. Ukraine and Turkey will square off in the final in Kiev at 3 p.m.
