The first game day of the new season for Werder Bremen ended with a 3-2 home loss against Eintracht Frankfurt. But there were positives to the start of the 2009-10 campaign. Bremen fans saw first hand that the West Curve is slowly taking form, as part of the new stands were available with a steel grandstands in the lower level. Some 1,800 away fans were able to follow the game from just meters away from the pitch in the West stands of the Weser-Stadion. And an 800-square meter netting was put up on Thursday to help protect Frankfurt fans from off-target shots.

Directly over the heads of the Frankfurt fans hung a huge poster from Werder’s new outfitter Nike. The display showed bigger than life sized Werder players Torsten Frings, Mesut Özil, Tim Wiese, Naldo and Clemens Fritz as well as slogans from the "Last 1%" television commercials seen on WERDER.TV. The mega-poster has already been since taken down to avoid stadium construction from being hindered.

And for the first time, the new LED video screens were used between the upper and lower levels of the north stands as well as the opposite south side. But there were also new features on the pitch. The playing field itself was moved 1.36 meters towards to East Curve so that the pitch would be exactly in the middle of the future inner area.
