For the first time in two years, Werder Bremen will host a German Cup match at their home Weser-Stadion. The defending champion Green-Whites will face off with St. Pauli in the second round of the competition, which will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday, 22/23 September 2009. That was the result of Saturday night’s draw by the German women’s Footballer of the Year Inka Grings. The exact fixture is yet to be determined.

Personnel at the reigning German Cup champions were very happy about finally playing a home match. “Some times wishes do come true. We and our fans had to wait a long time for a game in our own stadium. Now we have to worry about advancing from this round,” said Werder manager Klaus Allofs. “If you look at the second round pairings, our game is among the most attractive. And the proximity of the clubs adds a derby feeling as well.”

Clemens Fritz was also happy about the draw. “This is a great draw. St. Pauli always means hotly-contested matches. It’s good for the fans and for us that we can present ourselves at home as well as cup winners. Now we have to win,” added Fritz.

Werder Bremen faced St. Pauli in the German Cup three and a half years ago, losing in Hamburg 3-1 on a snow and ice covered grounds in the quarter-finals on 25 January 2006.
