Werder Bremen lost their first game of the new Bundesliga season, dropping a bitter home defeat 3-2 against Eintracht Frankfurt at Weser-Stadion...

Werder Bremen started their new season with a loss. Thomas Schaaf’s team was knocked off 3-2 against Eintracht Frankfurt in front of 34,000 spectators at Weser-Stadion. Ioannis Amanatidis (6’, 42’) scored twice for Frankfurt, who also saw Martin Fenin (71’) on target. And Mesut Özil (13’) and Boubacar Sanogo (44’) tallied in a losing effort for Werder. Bremen finished the game with 10 men as Sebastian Prödl was sent off in second half injury time.

The 34,000 spectators at Weser-Stadion saw a surprisingly strong Eintracht Frankfurt side as well as a Werder team which could not figure out its defensive problems over the full 90 minutes. The guests jumped ahead in the early going as a strong Ioannis Amanatidis hit home in the sixth minute. Mesut Özil was fouled in the area and converted a penalty in the 13th minute to knot the game. Amanatidis’s second goal in the 42nd minute put Werder back in deficit though Boubacar Sanogo took advantage of a keeper error to even things just two minutes later for the 2-2 score line at intermission.

Thomas Schaaf’s team continued to struggle in the second half and went behind for the third time after 71 minutes on a corner kick. Martin Fenin stood perfectly placed to re-direct the corner in from short distance past Bremen keeper Tim Wiese. Werder tried to push forward and draw even a third time but Bremen could not keep their nerves and had to settle for the defeat. Sebastian Prödl was sent off a minute into second half injury time for his second booking.
