On Thursday, German national team coach Joachim Löw nominated three Werder players for his 20 man squad to take part in the up-coming World Cup qualifier (August 12th, 6pm CET) against Azerbaijan in Baku. The Green-Whites to receive the call-up were goalkeeper Tim Wiese, central defender Per Mertesacker and midfielder Mesut Özil. The German coach opted against calling on further Werder assistance, including captain Torsten Frings.

In justifying the reasons for his selection, the national team trainer praised the Werder keeper and deemed him “The most consistent goalkeeper throughout the second half of the last season.” But the final decision on the question of who will be between the posts is yet to be made. On the omittance of Torsten Frings Joachim Löw said: “Throughout last season, Torsten was plagued by injury, suffered fluctuating form and had mixed performances. We did also register though that his form improved and that he played well towards the end of the season. If Torsten can continue to display good performances he will not be stricken off the list. At the moment I consider Hitzlsperger to be ahead in that position.
