German Cup reigning champions Werder Bremen easily advanced to the second round with a 5-0 victory at promoted second division side Union Berlin. Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf saw Boubacar Sanogo and Marcelo Moreno Martins each score two goals and Naldo also hitting the back of the net.
Werder were very concentrated playing in front of 19,000 spectators in the Alten Försterei stadium, going ahead in the 11th minute on a fine individual move by the strong Sanogo. Naldo made it 2-0 just nine minutes later after a corner from Torsten Frings. And the game was all but decided after Sanogo made it 3-0 after a fine assist from Hugo Almeida in the 27th minute.
Thomas Schaaf’s team was a bit more relaxed in the second half though they always kept the aggressive Berlin side under control. New acquisition Moreno came in for Sanogo in the 78th minute and finished off the scoring with goals in the 85th and 88th minutes for the reigning cup champions. Bremen had little trouble with Berlin and deserved to win as clearly as they did.
