Werder Bremen's first official match of the 2009-10 season will be a special one. Just 64 days after knocking off Bayer Leverkusen to win the German Cup in Berlin's Olympic Stadium, the Green-Whites will return to the German capital on Sunday, 2 August, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. to face second division side Union Berlin in the first round of the German Cup. "We don't have to look at the cup again. The memories of the success are still very fresh," said head coach Thomas Schaaf, who believes the final success in May is the best source of motivation.
"Everyone knows that it's something special to play the cup finale in Berlin. The draw for the first round brings us back to the right city. But it will depend on us to advance, overcome all the other challenges and in the end run out into Olympic Stadium again," said the coach about his team's defence of the title.
"We want to attack Berlin early but also not allow Union any counter-attack chances. We have to improve compared to the game against Aachen where we saw how determined a second division club can play," added the Werder coach.
