Werder Bremen's final rehearsal for the start of their season was more or less a positive one. Werder had to swallow a 6-4 loss in penalties against Spanish top flight Valencia - though they were even at 2-2 after 90 minutes. "Of course, it's too bad that we lost grip on the match. In the first half things went very good. We played pretty well and had everything in control. After leading 2-0, we should have brought home the victory," said Marko Marin.
"We could see that we are fighting with not having had all the players in the preparations. That is problematic for anyone not there from day one," said coach Thomas Schaaf. Manager Klaus Allofs added: "Valencia is a very strong team if you let them play with the ball. Then they are dangerous. We played well for 30 minutes in the first half. But then we lost our rhythm."
