Werder Bremen had to swallow their first test match defeat of the summer as the German Cup winners lost 3-2 at Alemannia Aachen. The hosts used nearly all of their opportunities in a curios first half while Bremen missed on all their chances. Nemeth (14th), Müller (44th) and Auer (45th) scored for Aachen. Werder were more effective in the second half with Marko Marin scoring his first goal for Bremen in the 52nd, and Boubacar Sanogo cut the lead to 3-2 in the 83rd. But Werder could not find the equaliser in the end, which would have been deserved.

And so the game ended well for Aachen, who were bidding farewell to their Tivoli stadium. But it was a warning for Werder, who still have plenty to do before the first real match of the season.

Alemannia Aachen:

Stuckmann – Casper (71’ Junglas), Szukala, Olajengbesi, Achenbach – Fiel, Burkhardt (84’ Kratz), Müller, Milchraum (71’ Lasnik) – Auer (60’ Oussalé), Nemeth (84’ Özgen)

Werder Bremen:

Wiese (46’ Vander) – Fritz (63’ Harnik), Mertesacker, Naldo, Boenisch (46’ Pasanen) – Frings (63’ Niemeyer), Borowski (75’ Vranjes), Özil (46’ Hunt), Bargfrede (46’ Marin) – Moreno (46’ Sanogo), Hugo Almeida (75’ Husejinovic)
