"We would like to thank you for once again making this special day such a great success. It is sensational," said Werder manager of professional football and public relations Klaus Allofs at the opening of the official team presentation. Some 25,000 Werder supporters attended Fans Day 2009 on Saturday at the Bremen Bürgerweide and AWD-Dome.
Traditionally among the favourite attractions once again was the autograph hour with Werder players and coaching staff. Despite careful planning, it was expected ahead of time that it would be almost impossible to fulfil every fan’s autograph wishes. The fans and players were hardly expected to be like an assembly line. And of course there were chances for the odd chat between player and fan and pictures with the players. Some 2,500 autograph seekers got autographs from their players within the two hours. Of course that was not enough for the ever-growing Werder euphoria.
But just like last year, the autograph hour was just one part of Fans Day. Green-white supporters also could have their picture taken with the German Cup or take a walk on the original Werder team bus. There was also a fashion show by Werder’s new supplier Nike, in which the new jerseys were worn by a professional break dance group. Afterwards, every player was introduced to the fans and warmly welcomed. The program also included a musical show in the AWD-Dome by the band Afterburner, who fired up the fans with hits like "Wir sind Werder Bremen" ("We are Werder Bremen") and "Lebenslang grün-wei" ("Green-white for life").
Werder media director Tino Polster said the event went well. "That the event had to take place at the Bürgerweide because of the renovations at Weser-Stadion proved to not be a negative. The feedback from the fans was generally very positive. If there are renovations of the East Curve next year then we will try to hold Fans Day here again," said Polster.
