German Cup winners Werder Bremen put together a convincing performance in knocking off German champions Wolfsburg. But there was hardly a feeling of title euphoria among Werder players in the Volkswagen Arena. Bremen were much more pleased however having played a strong test match. But it was only a test. "Of course it sounds really good, winning away at the German champions. But it was a game which must not be overestimated," said Clemens Fritz after the contest.
But Bremen fans do have a few things to be pleased about. Not only did Werder grab the trophy but also had the best player on the pitch. Television viewers selected new acquisition Marcelo Moreno as the award winner. "That is a big honour for me," said the striker, who was subbed out after a good hour. "This honour will give me even more self-confidence".
Head coach Thomas Schaaf has seen that his team is already harmonising well. Still he hopes for even more. "In stretches we saw quite a bit of good play. We can be satisfied up to this point. There was a basic order and some passing combinations worked well as well. But I would have liked to have seen more of it," said the coach.
