Calling the Volkswagen SuperCup just a test match is somehow kind of tough. The game against German champions Wolfsburg is actually the most spectacular game of Werder’s summer preparations. The showdown between Germany’s two title holders from 2008-09 kicks off Monday, 20 July 2009 at 8:20 p.m. in Wolfsburg’s Volkswagen Arena and will be broadcasted live on ZDF. After the cancellation of the test game against West Ham United, the match is especially important for head coach Thomas Schaaf whose plan to keep his team in rhythm was somewhat throw out of whack by the heavy rains in Bad Waltersdorf.
Monday’s game is also a serious rehearsal for the tough season opener in the German Cup. The name SuperCup is based on the same-named competition, which is played in many countries between the reigning champions and cup winners. This match existed in Germany from 1987 to 1996 before being replaced by the now-defunct League Cup. Werder played four times in the SuperCup and won three times: 1988 (2-0 against Frankfurt), 1993 (in penalties versus Leverkusen) and 1994 (3-1 in extra time in Munich). The game was in-officially revived last summer when cup winners Borussia Dortmund beat Bayern Munich 2-1.
