Three Werder players answered journalists' questions in the press room of the Golf Hotel Norderney. WERDER.DE was of course right in the middle of things and summarised the most important statements:
Long-term goal as short-term goal: Tim Wiese
Goalkeeper Tim Wiese was enjoying a bowl of cherries while offering some insight into his thoughts on the 2009-10 World Cup season. "I hope that we are successful with Werder and I stay injury-free - then it is also my goal to be the number one for Germany," Wiese said right away. The long-term goal South Africa is therefore actually a short-term goal since the qualification match in Russia in October will likely mean a preliminary decision by the national team coaching staff for who will fill the keeper spot. "I will give everything I have to be in goal there," said Wiese.
In the middle of retraining: Martin Harnik
Directly after Tim Wiese, Martin Harnik made his way into the circle. And during the discussion, he had one central sentence: "It is more important to take part in a victory that to decide it." This remark demonstrated the process in which the German-Austrian is currently going through. Harnik is being retrained from a striker to outside defender, preferably on the right side, and he is getting rid of the egoism that every striker must possess. Early on, Harnik said he was not in favour of the new role but he has since befriended the move very well. "I don't miss the striker position at all," said Harnik. It also helps that the modern outside defender is often considered an "offensive defender" - as Harnik said. "He pushes forward often enough. Especially with us, where the midfield is posted right of center, the wing is often free."
Initial result: Marcelo Moreno Martins
Marcelo Moreno Martins also has big goals in year two after his transfer to Europe. The new acquisition explained that he has been welcomed very nicely by his new team-mates and he is happy to have played his first game with Werder. "You could see that I was not 100 percent in form," he admitted. "But we are at the beginning of the preparations, have trained a lot and very intensively. Teamplay will only get better and I must and will improve," said Moreno Martins.
