"Holidays came at the wrong time point. I would have liked to have played through it," said Clemens Fritz before a laugh came over his face. His point was that after a mostly disappointing season personally he ended the last campaign on a high note. "The easiness was back again. I could run quite a bit again," said Fritz, who also talked openly about his ups and downs. He said muscular problems gave him problems and he didn't have trust in his body. And in the decisive moments that inhibited him. "That stays with you and you take it home with you. Actually, I don't think negatively. But when it lasts longer you start to have thoughts ..."
It was the aftermath of the 2008 European Championship, from which he never recovered. The preparations of just three weeks were very short. But it looks differently this season. "I am a lot more relaxed. In four weeks of holidays you can recuperate again. At the end I was really happy that it kicked off again," said Fritz, who spent his vacation with a trip around Italy and laying in the sun on Ibiza.
But that is over with. Now waiting in the sun at Norderney are more unpleasant duties. "I don't like being here. But the drills are very important for me and my position. I am incredibly dependant on my physique," said Fritz. In addition, he is continually working on his problem areas: the groin, adductors and stomach muscles. Clemens Fritz wants to play a strong season for Werder in 2009-10 and make a run for Germany's 2010 World Cup squad. But he would need to become a regular again with Werder despite plenty of competition at his position. "I am not thinking about others but I put pressure on myself. I just have to play consistently this season," added Fritz.
