Torsten Frings is Werder Bremen's new captain. The previous vice-team leader took over the position in the first week of training after the retirement of Frank Baumann. Head coach Thomas Schaaf decided on the 32-year-old German international and made the announcement on Monday. "Torsten took over this responsibility a few times in the past couple years and there is no reason to change anything. Torsten knows what duties are connected with that. He can have a positive influence on the team with his personality and represents our interests well with his experience," the Bremen coach told WERDER.TV on Monday.
The new captain also leads the troops at training at Norderney.
The midfielder is excited about the coach's trust. "I have always taken responsibility in the past. I know that I can bring my influence into the team even without the captain's armband. But of course it's an honour for me," said Frings.
The midfielder has been with the Green-Whites longer than any other player on Werder's squad. He played in a Werder shirt from 1996 to 2002, and after stops with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich he returned to Bremen in 2005. Of his 340 Bundesliga matches, 264 of them have been in a green-white jersey. And he has scored 24 of his 37 Bundesliga goals for Werder Bremen. Torsten Frings also has a wealth of international experience. He has earned 79 caps for Germany and finished runner-up at the 2002 World Cup and the 2008 European Championship and third at the 2006 World Cup.
Torsten Frings will be supported in his work by vice captain Per Mertesacker, who also led the team a couple times last season.
