The training daily routine has begun for Werder at Norderney. The first full day could become the model for the coming week. At 7:40 a.m., head coach Thomas Schaaf called the team to beach run. And the first training began at 10:45 a.m. on the Sportsplatz an der Mühle grounds. And the training day ended in the early evening with a third session and a final run of nearly four kilometres back to the hotel.
"The team held up pretty good," praised Thomas Schaaf, who also explained that it was important for him that the time in the basic training camp is not spent with a lot of pure running. "The coordinative work which we are doing here or the drills for strength are all done with a ball. There is always a coordinating action – a connection to the game," said the coach.
On the sidelines of training, Schaaf offered updates on the progress of two long-term injured players. "Per Mertesacker continues to work on rehabilitation in Donaustauf. By now he can bear weight and will now be pushed with intensive exercises. Hopefully he can come with to Austria," said the coach. Markus Rosenberg is also hopeful of attending the second training camp in Bad Waltersdorf. But his knee problems are still bad enough that he cannot bear enough weight.
