Season preparations for Werder players began on Thursday with the traditional lactate test at the U23 grounds Platz 11. "It was a good feeling to see the friends and colleagues again. And we had plenty of fun right away in the locker room," said Sebastian Prödl after the first training session.

It was clear by looking at goalkeeper Tim Wiese that the new Nike shirts will not stay dry too long. And team-mate Aaron Hunt said he expects more of the same in the up-coming training camp at Norderney (3-9 July 2009). "Norderney is always really hard. But the training camp will prepare us well for the new season," said Hunt.

Missing for the start of training was Werder new acquisition Marcelo Moreno Martins, who had to postpone his flight due to illness. The Bolivian is scheduled to arrive in Bremen on time to accompany the team to the first training camp. Also missing unexpectedly was Said Husejinovic, who is once again part of the roster after being on loan to Kaiserslautern. The Bosnian was unable to enter Germany because of a visa problem. "I hope that he can come to Bremen tonight so that he can travel with us to Norderney," said head coach Thomas Schaaf.

The following 24 players will be at the first training camp at Norderney: Wiese, Pasanen, Naldo, Tosic, Vranjes, Fritz, Moreno Martins, Hunt, Prödl, Husejinovic, Mielitz, Frings, Almeida, Niemeyer, Andersen, Futacs, Ikeng, Vander, Harnik, Schmidt, Wiedwald, Bargfrede, Perthel, Oerhl.
