Great news for all Werder fans: the North Derby against Hamburg is scheduled for the final matchday of the up-coming 2009-10 Bundesliga season! Hamburg come to Bremen's Weser-Stadion on 8 May 2010, meaning Werder will have a home game on the final matchday for the first time since 2001. After last season's four-derby showdown within 19 days, Werder fans will have to wait until the 17th gameday (18-20 December 2009) for the next showdown in the north.
Start with a home game against Eintracht Frankfurt
The new Bundesliga season will begin for Werder on 8/9 August 2009 with a home match against Eintracht Frankfurt. The team from Hesse was one of the Green-Whites' favourite opponents last season as Werder won both contests 5-0 in Frankfurt and at Weser-Stadion. The away match against Eintracht and the first game of the second half of the season will take place between 15-17 January 2010.
And an absolute thriller is planned for the second week of the season for head coach Thomas Schaaf's team, which heads to Bayern Munich for the first road match of the season (home game against Bayern at Weser-Stadion on 22-24 January 2010). One week later, Werder return home to play against Borussia Mönchengladbach, the former club of new acquisition Marko Marin. The exact dates of the first few matchdays will be released soon, according to the German Football League DFL.
Showdown with Hoffenheim to start Free Fair
After the average performance on the road in the Bundesliga last season, Werder players have some tough tests in the first few weeks away from home and hope for redemption early on. But Werder's first four road matches are against four contenders for international spots (Bayern Munich, Hertha Berlin, Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart).
After the Stuttgart match, the 10th matchday will see the start of the Bremen Free Fair (16 October to 1 November 2009) as well as a special home match. At least that would be the case if Hoffenheim and Bremen offer up similar football to the spectacular 5-4 home victory last season - which was one of the best matches of the 2008-09 season.
Bremen take on the reigning German champions Wolfsburg on the 14th and 28th matchdays, with the home game coming in the first half of the season. The 2009 championship-winning coach Felix Magath and Schalke are Bremen's opponents on the penultimate round of play - a chance for the fans and players to get ready for the highlight of the last gameday.
