Reigning champions Werder Bremen will travel to Union Berlin in first round play of the 2009-10 German Cup. That means the new cup season kicks off where the previous one ended – in the German capital. The Berlin side were promoted last season to Germany’s second division.
"Back to Berlin. We like to go there! It’s a tough draw because there is plenty of euphoria there since the promotion. But we have to get past them," said Bremen midfielder Torsten Frings. And playmaker Mesut Özil added: "I think from a sports standpoint we have to win. It will not be an easy start to the season. But we are a clear favourite as reigning champions."
The 32 first round games will be played between 31 July and 3 August 2009. The exact schedule has not yet been determined. The second round of the 2009-10 German Cup is planned for 22-23 September 2009 while the Round of 16 will be played on 27-28 October 2009. The quarter-finals will take place on 9-10 February 2010 while the semi-finals are scheduled for 23-24 March 2010. The 2009-10 German Cup final will take place on 15 May 2010 in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium.
