The German U21 national team knocked off five-time champions Italy 1-0 to reach the final of the European Championship in Sweden. Two current Werder players - Mesut Özil and Sebastian Boenisch - and one new acquisition - Marko Marin - were in Germany's starting line-up. The two German Cup winners played 90 minutes (Özil was subbed out in the final minute for a defender) while Marin was taken out after 55 minutes. Italian Salvatore Bocchetti went rudely into a tackle and hit the 20-year-old Marin on his right foot, resulting in him being subbed out due to injury. An exact diagnosis is still to come. The Germans' winning goal against the tough Italians was scored by Andreas Beck in the 48th minute. Horst Hrubesch's team will face off against England in Monday's final in Malmö after the English knocked off hosts Sweden in the second semi-final.
