The German U21 national team along with Werder midfielder Mesut Özil played to a 1-1 draw against England Monday night in Halmstad to reach the semi-finals as the second-placed team from Group B. England were already qualified for the semi-finals coming into the game. Gonzalo Castro made it 1-0 for the Germans while Jack Rodwell equalised for England.
Germany had a perfect start to the game and went ahead just five minutes into the game against Adam Johnson's completely reshaped English side. Jerome Boateng played a perfect pass into the area to Gonzalo Castro, who used his chance and beat England keeper Scott Loach with a low shot. The English equalised 1-1 on Rodwell's header off a corner kick in the 29th minute. That ended up being the final score of the game. Werder Bremen's Sebastian Boenisch was unable to play due to injury, just like against Finland. The defender hopes to play in the semi-finals.
England play against the second placed team from Group A on Friday at 6 p.m. in the first semi-final. Germany take on the Group A winners in the second semi at 8:45 p.m.
