Mesut Özil is one of the most visible players at the U21 European Championship in Sweden. But that was not enough for the Werder player, who set up both goals on Thursday in Germany’s 2-0 victory over Finland. For the Bremen player, the only thing important is the success of the national team to add to the laurels of Werder’s German Cup crown. But in order to reach this goal, the German U21 team must first get past England in the final Group B match against Group leaders England (22 June 2009 8:45 p.m., live in German channel ZDF).

In a conversation with WERDER.DE, Özil talks about Germany’s next opponent, says why he would rather set up a goal than score himself, and talks about a possible contract extension.

Mesut, is England the toughest team in your group?

I think so. They don’t have six points from the first two games for nothing. There were the better team in both games, even against Finland with 10 players. It will definitely be very difficult against them. They play very compact. They also have a lot of good individual players. But we know what we can do. Therefore we don’t need to be afraid of England. We will give everything we have and want to win first place in the group.

During the week, Joachim Löw spoke very positively about you and your performance against Spain. How important is it for you to hear the praise of the German national team coach?

Of course that gives me extra motivation. It’s great and a chance for us since the German national team coach is here at the U21s and watches our games lives. My goal is to play with the German national team, and I definitely want to be at the 2010 World Cup. I will continue to give everything I have and try to get myself selected.

You set up 25 goals for Bremen this season, the second-most assists in the league, also even more than Diego. Now you have also scored two goals. Would you rather set up a goal or score it yourself?

I would rather set it up. You could see that on Thursday (laughing). On the second goal, I could have shot myself, but Ashkan Dejagah was all alone and I played over to him.

In an interview with WERDER.DE, your room-mate Sebastian Boenisch said you should try to score more. Then you would score more goals, like in the German Cup final.

I never shoot on goal and then others say something and I score. I am wdorking on it and will try in the future to try and score more.

After your strong season and the first action at the U21 European Championship, many fans express the hope that you will extend your contract with Bremen. Do you have any good news for Werder supporters?

I have a contract until 2011. After the European Championship, my adviser, me and Klaus Allofs will definitely hold talks. But right now I want to concentrate on the European Championship and not think about other things.
