That was the Mesut Özil that Werder fans know from last season with 25 assists! The Bremen midfielder set up both goals in less than three minutes of the Germany U21 national team’s 2-0 victory against Finland, leading his team to their first win at the European Championship in Sweden.
Germany’s showing in the first half against the tough Finns was disappointing but things changed after half-time. In the 59th minute, Özil sent in a free kick from the right side to the open Benedikt Höwedes, who headed home the important 1-0 lead. The Werder playmaker was at it again just 120 seconds later, sending a fine pass through Ashkan Dejagah, who slotted into the empty net for the decisive 2-0 victory.
Combined with England's 2-0 victory over Spain, Germany only need a draw in their final group game on Monday against England to reach the U21 semi-finals. Injured Werder defender Sebastian Boenisch hopes to play again after watching from the stands against Finland.
