While his teammates from the U21 German national team prepare for their second European Championship first round game against Finland (18 June, 6:15 p.m., live in German channel ZDF), Werder’s injured defender Sebastian Boenisch is busy doing rehab work. Just two days after his ligament hyperextension in Germany’s opening game against Spain, there is good news about the 22-year-old Bremen defender. Boenisch and his sore ankle are on the road to recovery, as he explained in an interview with WERDER.DE.
Sebastian, how is your injury doing?
On Monday night, my right ankle was really swollen and could only limp. But thanks to the good medical attention here I can just about walk normally again.
The German Football Federation told us that there is hope that you could return later in the tournament. What can you say after talking to the doctors and staff?
In my current state, I couldn’t play at all. On Monday, I hope to return to team practice. That is the goal we are setting. We are working really intensively so that I can play again against England. I will fight and give everything I can. But I cannot give you a certain prognosis right now.
Speaking of England … they beat Finland 2-1 and are your last group opponents. After the Spain game, what do you think about the English and your next opponents Finland compared to the Iberians?
It will be a very interesting game against Finland. I saw their game against England and they showed that they have their qualities. We absolutely cannot underestimate the Finns. The game against England will be very physical, so therefore harder than the Spain game. They have rugged guys like us.
What can you say about Werder team-mate and room-mate Mesut Özil, who was picked by the media as the Player of the Match against Spain?
Mesut played a very good game against Spain, just like everyone else. Unfortunately we were just missing a goal. He just has to keep going like he is and just shoot like he did in the German Cup final and the ball will go in again.
