Werder defender Sebastian Boenisch had an unfavourable start to the U-21 European Championship on Monday in Germany’s 0-0 draw against Spain. After just more than 30 minutes in Germany’s opening game, the Bremen player went into an apparently harmless tackle against Spain’s Sisi and then rolled back, reeling in pain from a strained ligament in his right ankle.
The 22-year-old will miss Germany’s next group match at the U-21 tournament against Finland on Thursday 18 June at 6:15 p.m. It remains unclear if Boenisch will be available for the rest of the event. But there is hope that the Bremen player can return for the Germans. “It is not ruled out that Sebastian Boenisch can play again at this European Championship,” said a German Football Federation spokesman Tuesday afternoon.
