Werder’s two players with the German national team at the U-21 European Championship in Sweden made their presence felt in the 0-0 draw against Spain – but not in the same fashion. While Mesut Özil played 90 minutes and was Germany’s top player on the pitch, the tournament started off roughly for Sebastian Boenisch. The Bremen outside defender injured his right ankle in the first half and had to be subbed out in the 38th minute. A diagnosis of Boenisch’s injury was not given.
Özil, meanwhile, was part of nearly every fine attack for the German side, though he missed three good opportunities (35th, 62nd and 81st minutes) to score the winning goal. “We were the better team and absolutely wanted to win. I have to score a goal in that case. But it did not work out. So I am very disappointed,” said the Werder midfielder.
The Germans’ second game of the European Championship comes on Thursday (6:15 p.m., live on German channel ZDF) in Halmstad against Finland, who lost the Opening Match on Monday 2-1 against England. “Now we have gained a point against one of the favourites and we will give everything we have to win against Finland,” said Özil.
England are Germany’s third and final opponent in the first round, on Monday 22 June, also in Halmstad (8:45 p.m., live on German channel ZDF).
