The Finnish national team suffered a tough loss in their World Cup Group 4 qualification match against Russia on Wednesday 10 June 2009. In front of the home fans, Werder defender Petri Pasanen’s Finnish team lost 3-0 against Guus Hiddink’s Russian side.

Pasanen was subbed out of Finland’s 2-1 victory last Saturday over Liechtenstein at half-time with an Achilles tendon problem, but he was able to play the entire game against Russia. Still Pasanen and his backline partners could not slow down the Russians’ dangerous passing game. Finland trail second placed Russia by five points after six of 10 games and are six points behind group leaders Germany. Portugal, meanwhile, played Estonia to a scoreless draw in a Wednesday friendly. Werder striker Hugo Almeida was subbed in shortly before the final whistle and was unable to change the game.

Werder’s U21 German internationals Mesut Özil and Sebastian Boenisch were travelling on Thursday 11 June 2009 to Sweden where they were due to start the U21 European Championship on Monday 15 June 2009. Horst Hrubesch’s team will play just after the opening match against Spain in the first round Group B (8:45 p.m., live on German channel ZDF). On 18 June they face off with Finland (6:15 p.m.) and against England on 22 June (8:45 p.m.). "My full concentration is on the European Championship," said Sebastian Boenisch after reports that he would be nominated for the Polish senior national team. "That is not an issue for me." Werder Bremen has not received any notification of a nomination of Boenisch by the Polish federation.
