Werder Bremen’s first opponents next season will be Rot-Weiss Essen as the two clubs will play a test match during the Green-Whites’ training camp at Norderney (3-9 July 2009). The contest will take place on 7 July 2009 at 7 p.m. on the Sportplatz an der Mühle grounds.
The Essen club are currently playing in the fourth division, finishing last season in seventh place in the Regionalliga West league. Rot-Weiss played in Germany’s top flight until 1977 and won the German Cup in 1953 and the German league crown in 1955. Besides a few promotions to the second division, the club’s biggest success in the past couple decades came in 1994 when they reached the German Cup final which they lost to Werder Bremen 3-1.
The supporters of Werder Bremen and Rot-Weiss Essen have built a fan friendship even though their clubs’ top teams have rarely met in recent years. But there have been fan exchanges whenever Werder’s U23 team faces Rot-Weiss, which has happened 12 times since 2000.
