18 May 2009, Magdeburg: It's the final of the U17 European Championship between Germany and the Netherlands and Dortmund's Mario Götze is brought down 28 yards from the Dutch goal in the 97th minute. A free kick left of goal was awarded. Werder youth talent Florian Trinks runs up to the ball and gives it all he has. And the five-man wall and Dutch keeper Patrick ter Mate have to watch on in amazement as the ball lands in the near upper left hand corner, giving Germany the lead in extra time. "I just said, give it a try. No risk, no fun," Trinks would say later. Trinks's goal would remain the final goal in the final after Bremen team-mate Lennart Thy had equalised for 1-1 and Germany would be crowned U17 European Championships.
But Werder's youngster did not just score the deciding goal for a 2-1 victory in the final. He also may have scored the "Goal of the Month" for May. Other nominees include the German champion Edin Dzeko of Wolfsburg, Dortmund's Polish international Jakub Blaszczykowski, Hoffenheim midfielder Carlos Eduardo and Christian Eigler, who helped Nuremberg to advance to the Bundesliga with his goal in the relegation showdown with Energie Cottbus.
All Werder fans can vote for their U17 European champion until 21 June 2009 to give Florian Trinks his first "Goal of the Month" award of his young career. Go here to cast your vote. The award winner will be announced on 21 June 2009 on the German channel ARD’s Sportschau program.
