After a gruelling season with 55 competitive matches, most of the freshly-crowned German Cup winners were finally able to take a well-deserved holiday. But for a few Werder players the season is not quite over yet. Hugo Almeida, Petri Pasanen and Sebastian Prödl are all expected to play once or twice for their own national team this coming week. Markus Rosenberg was also nominated for the Swedish national team's World Cup qualifiers against Denmark (6 June 2009) and Malta (10 June 2009). But the striker is labouring with knee problems and will not be able to play.
Hugo Almeida and Portugal will face off against Albania on 6 June in a World Cup Group 1 qualifier and then play a test match against Estonia in Tallinn on 10 June. Petri Pasanen meanwhile will be playing twice for Finland in World Cup qualifiers in Group 4 against Liechtenstein on 6 June and against Russia on 10 June - both matches in Helsinki. Sebastian Prödl and Austria will take on Serbia on 6 June in Group 7. And >b>Mesut Özil and Sebastian Boenisch will play for Germany at the U21 European Championship in Sweden (15-29 June).
