Since the German Cup victory on Saturday it is clear that Werder Bremen will also play in an international competition for the next season 2009-10. Werder will play in the UEFA Europa League, the successor to the UEFA Cup, the final of which the Green-Whites reached in the last edition this past season.

There are a couple of changes between the Europa League and the UEFA Cup. The competition includes three stages: qualification, group and knock out. There will be four rounds in the qualification stage and Werder Bremen will enter the competition in the final qualifying round, which will be known as the Play-off Round.

The group stage and knockout stage will be played out similarly to the UEFA Champions League with 12 groups of four teams each playing home and away matches. The top two teams of the Europa League groups along with the third placed teams from the Champions League groups advance to the knockout stage, which begins with the Round of 16. Detailed information about the new model of the UEFA Europa League can be found here.

Werder Bremen will begin their European cup season on 20 August 2009, when all of the first legs of the fourth qualification round will be played. The return legs are planned for a week later, on 27 August 2009.
