Some 20,000 Werder fans gathered at the Bremen City Hall to welcome home Thomas Schaaf's team after winning the German Cup. And the fans went wild when Diego said from the City Hall balcony the magic words in German: "Thanks for everything!" and "I love Werder Bremen!"
A motorcade took the Werder team from the main train station through the city to City Hall where the team signed their names into the city's Golden Book. "Every one of us dreamt about standing up here with the cup, and it finally happened today," said Clemens Fritz, who documented his long stay along the City Hall railing with plenty of photos.
"This is exactly the atmosphere that kept pushing us. We wanted to be presented up here and dedicate this cup to the fans," said manager Klaus Allofs, who had to bear the occasional beer or champagne shower from his players while still in Berlin. And the party atmosphere did not slow down. Besides plenty of fanfare for the departing Diego and Frank Baumann, the Bremen fans celebrated the entire team, the cup and themselves for the great performance. And it stayed that way long into the evening.
