It was sometime between 12:30 a.m. and 1 a.m. in the Maritim hall of the same-named hotel in the Tiergarten district of Berlin when manager Klaus Allofs asked the heroes of the evening to come on stage. That seemed a bit tired, these heroes. And just happy. "It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will never forget," said Sebastian Prödl representatively for his team-mates.
"We wanted to win this title from the first minute and played a very strong game," said Torsten Frings. And manager Klaus Allofs was happy about a successful finish to the season: "Until today it was a good season. Now it is was a very good season." The manager made those comments to the press, standing in slippers and sports clothes - quite unusual for the usually so-elegantly clad manager. "The good clothes fell victim to a jump in the pool," explained Allofs. That's not entirely the whole story as the players pushed various team officials into the relaxation pool after returning to the locker room after their celebratory laps with the cup.
Things quieted down at the official banquet at the Maritim and the team along with Arnd Zeigler and the on-hand employees, sponsors and fans did their best to sign a few Werder songs. Everyone took a bit of time for some deep breaths to enjoy the golden cup and gain some strength from the buffet. After that, the team celebrated long into the night at a club in Berlin Kurfürstendamm.
Motorcade through the city
