Bolivian striker Marcelo Moreno Martins will transfer this summer from Shakhtar Donetsk to Werder Bremen. Werder manager Klaus Allofs confirmed the move Friday evening after the 21-year-old striker passed his medical examination in Bremen. Marcelo Moreno Martins will be on loan from the recently-crowned UEFA Cup champions for one year. Werder then have a buy-out option for an additional four years.

"Actually we were very close a year ago but I decided for Donetsk. I am very happy that Werder gave me a second chance. I would like to show my abilities in Bremen, help the team and continue to develop myself," said Moreno Martins.

"In Marcelo Moreno Martins, we are getting an athletic young striker who is very technically sound. I am convinced that our attack will continue to flourish," said head coach Thomas Schaaf. Moreno Martins will celebrate his 22nd birthday on 18 June 2009. In 2008 he was the leading scorer of the Copa Libertadores, the South American version of the Champions League. He made his debut with the Bolivian national team on 13 October 2007 and has been very productive for his home nation, scoring seven goals in 12 caps. The Santa Cruz de la Sierra native's most recent goal was the first score in Bolivia's sensational 6-1 victory over Argentina in World Cup qualification.
