A 5-1 loss at the new German champions, another opponent celebrating with a trophy, and once again a disappointed Bremen side. "We wanted to avoid that at all costs. That was another reason for us to really give all we had. It's hardly a good feeling, watching your opponents celebrate like that for the second time in four days," said team captain Frank Baumann after the game.
Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf was accordingly unsatisfied after the performance. "We didn't have to lose 5-1. Nobody wants that. Before we really got into the game it was already 3-0. After that we played with them and even had chances to make it 3-2. If we had done that things would have been interesting. But unfortunately we didn't take advantage of our chances - unlike Wolfsburg," said Schaaf. "We wanted to prove ourselves here. But that only works when you go into tackles mentally hard and with an edge. But we did not have that today," added manager Klaus Allofs.
Despite the understandable aggravation, Thomas Schaaf knew the reasons for the loss. "That was our 54th match of the season. We have been playing every three days for weeks now. Today we expended a lot of energy again because we ran quite a bit. But our missing effectiveness also had to do with our missing freshness," said the coach. Schaaf gave the entire team two days off to rejuvenate before the group reconvenes to work on dealing with the losses and analysing their mistakes. "Now we have to look at recovery and getting our heads cleared. We will start again on Tuesday morning," added Schaaf.
