If it's true what they say about unsuccessful dress rehearsals then Werder should have an outstanding UEFA Cup final on Wednesday. Supposedly, if the final practice before the premiere goes poorly, then the actual event will be triumphant. That should be the case after this afternoon. "The result today was secondary," said manager Klaus Allofs after the 3-1 loss at home against Karlsruhe. "But we should have played differently. We did not play very well today." Head coach Thomas Schaaf was hoping for a game "to keep us in rhythm". But that was not the case.
That was very surprising after the 5-0 victory in Frankfurt on Wednesday. "We moved very well in Frankfurt, pursued our opponents and did not let them get into the game. Today that was all different," criticised Schaaf. And that right from the beginning. "We never really got into the game. And right away we made two, three big mistakes," said captain Frank Baumann. Luckily for Werder, Tim Wiese made up for one of the mistakes, stopping the early penalty kick and giving his team the chance to get into the match. There was only a short stage of the game after the penalty that Bremen had a couple of chances. "We could have gone ahead then and the game would have been over," said Allofs.
"We were not ready to play as intensively as we needed to. We didn't have the right drive. And that's a question of attitude," said Thomas Schaaf. And Allofs added: "We made the same mistakes as we have so often this season: not enough effort, not enough discipline. And that cannot happen." The fans however were in a great mood, ready for a real "football festival", said Allofs. "We wanted something entirely different. We wanted to thank our fans for their super support all season. But that did not work out. We lost too many points to teams in the lower ranks. It was a very, very disappointing Bundesliga season," added an aggravated Baumann. Remarkably though, the fans looked past the disappointment and continued to support their team with full excitement despite the deficit.
