Thomas Schaaf’s Werder Bremen dropped their final home match of the season against relegation-threatened Karlsruhe 3-1 at Weser-Stadion. While Werder missed a number of chances in the first half, Karlsruhe went ahead through goals by Lars Stindl in the 28th and 39th minutes. Alexander Iashvili made it 3-0 in the 55th minute before Hugo Almeida scored a consolation goal for Werder in the 73rd minute.
The game in front of 40,000 spectators in Weser-Stadion started with plenty of excitement. Sebastian Prödl could only stop Stindl in the area with a foul, resulting in a Karlsruhe penalty. Tim Wiese however was able to block away Marco Engelhardt’s attempt from the spot. Karlsruhe keeper Markus Miller made a fine stop of a header by Werder captain Frank Baumann after a quarter-hour. Bremen then had luck that Sebastian Freis could only strike the right post on a counter attack.
But the ball was in Werder’s goal after another counter attack in the 28th minute. Stindl was quickest to a cross from the right side and beat Wiese. Stindl struck again six minutes before the break with a superb shot into the upper right corner from the edge of the area.
The game was decided in the 55th minute with the 3-0 score by Alexander Iashvili, who hit home Freis’s cross from the right side. Hugo Almeida was at least able to pull back a consolation goal in the 73rd minute for Werder. Schaaf’s men continued to push forward in the final quarter-hour. Seven minutes before the break, Diego shot just over the crossbar from 14 yards and it was not enough in a 3-1 loss at home against Karlsruhe.
