Werder Bremen finally won again on the road by beating Eintracht Frankfurt 5-0. Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf received goals by Torsten Frings in the 51st and 56th minutes as well as Alexandros Tziolis (60’), Claudio Pizarro (63’) and Hugo Almeida (77’).
The 51,400 spectators in Frankfurt saw an up-tempo match from both teams. Werder had the first chance of the game as Pizarro fed Frings with a fine pass but the German international struck only the side netting. Pizarro was stopped in the 17th minute as Frankfurt keeper Markus Pröll fended away the Peruvian’s header. And Bremen were lucky to have it 0-0 in the 25th minute as Sebastian Boenisch cleared at the line Alexander Meier’s shot, which went through the legs of Werder keeper Tim Wiese.
Both teams remained aggressive and gave the fans an entertaining contest. Pizarro’s long distance shot went just wide and eight minutes before the break Wiese showed his class with a superb reaction to stop Martin Fenin’s attempt and sent Bremen into the intermission deadlocked at 0-0.
Thomas Schaaf’s team grabbed the lead shortly after the break. Patrick Ochs was shown the red card for his tackle of Mesut Özil in the area as last defender. Frings converted the resulting penalty confidently. And the German midfielder scored again five minutes later as Pizarro found Frings who beat Pröll with a fine placed shot from just outside the area. Werder took over complete control of the game and scored at will the rest of the way. Tziolis (60’), Pizarro (63’) and Almeida (77’) finished off the scoring though Bremen could have won even bigger than the final 5-0 score – which was also the score of Bremen’s win at home against Frankfurt earlier in the season.
