Werder Bremen won the fourth North Derby against Hamburg within three weeks, collecting a 2-0 victory in front of 42,100 spectators in a sold-out Weser-Stadion. Hugo Almeida scored both goals in the 34th and 49th minutes for Thomas Schaaf’s team, which was without the injured Diego and Per Mertesacker as well as the suspended Clemens Fritz and Sebastian Boenisch
Both teams spent the early going feeling each other out before the game really started. The first highlight came in the 15th minute for Schaaf’s team as Markus Rosenberg collected a fine pass by Torsten Frings and struck the left post with a flat shot from 16 yards.
Piotr Trochowski missed a great chance to give Hamburg the lead nine minutes later, hitting wide from 14 yards. Almeida proved more efficient in the 34th minute on a counter-attack goal. Rosenberg sent a cross from the left side perfectly to Almeida and the Portuguese striker pushed home the score from short distance. Werder keeper Tim Wiese proved his worth just before the intermission with an excellent stop on Jose Paolo Guerrero’s attempt from five yards out, giving Bremen a 1-0 lead at the break.
Almeida all but decided the game shortly after the re-start. A counter-attack down the left side went through Mesut Özil, who passed onto a streaking Almeida for a fine flat shot into the right corner. Schaaf’s men controlled the match thereafter as Peter Niemeyer, Hugo Almeida, Torsten Frings, Claudio Pizarro and Torsten Oehrl all missed chances, including Oehrl hitting the post eight minutes from time. Bremen clearly could have won the game even more convincingly.
