Werder Bremen will miss midfielder Diego for the next couple of weeks after the Brazilian suffered a torn muscle fibre in his thigh while executing a corner kick in the final minutes of Saturday afternoon's final training. Detailed examinations later in the evening confirmed the first diagnosis. Diego will definitely miss the up-coming Bundesliga matches against Hamburg and Frankfurt.

The same goes for defender Per Mertesacker as the German international was operated on his ankle Friday afternoon and is undergoing rehabilitation in Donaustauf. "The procedure went well, but it does not look like he can play again this season," said Thomas Schaaf about hopes of a quick recovery by Mertesacker. The Bremen coach would not say who would take over the German international's spot in Werder's backline. "We have a lot of options on how to react," said Schaaf. One candidate is Austrian Sebastian Prödl, who was praised by the coach: "We are very satisfied with his work at the moment. He did a very good job in Hamburg."

With injuries and the suspensions of Clemens Fritz and Sebastian Boenisch, Thomas Schaaf only has 17 available players for Sunday's North Derby against Hamburg, including the U23 players Torsten Oehrl and Timo Perthel.

The following 17 players will play against Hamburg in Part Four of the recent North Derby series: Wiese, Mielitz, Tosic, Prödl, Naldo, Baumann, Özil, Frings, Tziolis, Niemeyer, Rosenberg, Pizarro, Perthel, Oehrl, Vranjes, Almeida, Harnik.
