Six players - Diego, Aaron Hunt, Daniel Jensen, Mesut Özil, Petri Pasanen and Christian Vander - were missing in the final training ahead of Werder’s Bundesliga match at Cologne on Sunday, 3 May 2009. Hugo Almeida, who received a kick to his heel in the UEFA Cup match against Hamburg, had to leave practice early and is also out for the Cologne contest. "It doesn’t look good. The wound on my heel is still very large and hurts a lot," said the Portuguese striker.

"Diego was hit in his back early on against Hamburg and will therefore miss the game," said head coach Thomas Schaaf. "Mesut Özil has a knee problem and Torsten Frings and Niklas Andersen are both suspended." In light of the nine missing players, Schaaf nominated 20-year-old midfielder Timo Perthel for the game. And it’s unclear which players will play in Cologne.

There was one piece of good news from training as 25-year-old midfielder Peter Niemeyer on Saturday received the green light after missing Thursday’s game with a thigh muscle problem. "I don’t have any more pain or problems with my thigh and I am ready," said Niemeyer.

The following 16 players are making the trip to Cologne: Wiese, Boenisch, Naldo, Tosic, Baumann, Vranjes, Fritz, Rosenberg, Prödl, Tziolis, Pizarro, Niemeyer, Mertesacker, Harnik, Pellatz, Perthel
