The second part of the “Quattro-Derby“ between Werder Bremen and Hamburg promises just as much excitement as the premiere provided last week. Observers could sense that Wednesday afternoon from the statements made by both coaches. “Both teams played a great game last week and we know that Hamburg will look for their chances again, will be very energetic and be looking for a good first result,“ warned Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf. And he was confirmed by his Hamburg colleague. “Werder played very good last week. But we will do everything we can to reach Istanbul,“ said Jol.

Jol does not feel his team is under any extra pressure. “We were under pressure over the weekend against Dortmund. We absolutely wanted to win but could not do it. But that is not the case on Thursday. We are able to play in a semi-final. We have come a long way,“ said Jol. Thomas Schaaf sees things similarly. “Both games have a very special meaning. We are happy to have come so far and are allowed to take on this challenge. Winning last week is a help, but it doesn’t bring us anything. The only thing is that we can take a positive feeling from that game as well as the great incentive of playing in another final,“ added Schaaf.

Both teams will be missing important players in the first showdown. Hamburg did not travel with Mladen Petric (cut shin) and Marcell Jansen (bruised rib). And Werder on Thursday will be without Peter Niemeyer (muscle problem), Petri Pasanen (toe), Aaron Hunt (ankle) and Daniel Jensen (Achilles tendon). Reserve keeper Christian Vander was added to the list after the final training as he had to cut practice short with knee pain. “We will look at it more extensively, but the first impression doesn’t look that good,“ said Schaaf, who fears a longer break for Vander. U23 keeper Sebastian Mielitz was added to the roster. Meanwhile, captain Frank Baumann has overcome his muscular problem.
