Only four of the five Werder players who missed Monday practice due to their routine yearly medical check-ups were back at team training on Tuesday. While Hugo Almeida, Sebastian Boenisch, Torsten Frings and Tim Wiese all returned, the fifth player midfielder Peter Niemeyer has been battling thigh muscle problems since Saturday.
"I felt something in the muscle during the game against Bochum and directly after it. Later I thought it was just a sore muscle. But it hasn't gotten better since Saturday," said Niemeyer. The defender was on the pitch just as long as his team-mates on Tuesday but just like Frank Baumann completed an intensive individual program with physiotherapist Stefan Wolters. Niemeyer did not however want to say if he could play against Hamburg. "I hope that I can be there on Thursday," added the 25-year-old.
Returnee Frank Baumann, who missed the start of training this week, assumes that he can play in Thursday's UEFA Cup semi-final first leg as long as he doesn't have pain on Wednesday. Whether the captain will be around will be decided at the final practice.
