The Werder players started their training week ahead of the UEFA Cup home first leg against Hamburg on Monday after an off day on Sunday. Head coach Thomas Schaaf had to do without five players on Saturday, but the alarm bells were not going off. The quintet of Torsten Frings, Hugo Almeida, Tim Wiese, Sebastian Boenisch and Peter Niemeyer all had appointments for their yearly medical check-up which all Bundesliga players undergo. The next team training starts again on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
In addition to the still injured Aaron Hunt (ankle), defender Petri Pasanen must also remain patient after making an appearance on Monday with a thick bandage on the big toe of his right foot after having the toe nail removed. “It wasn’t very nice but I can run again and ride the bike. I don’t know if it’s enough to play against Hamburg. At the moment it doesn’t look that way. It is an important game but I want to take the necessary time so that I don’t have to sit out again after the first kick against it,“ said the Finnish international, who could not hide his good spirit. “I assume that there will be more important games for us in the future. For example the return leg in Hamburg,“ added the smiling defender before one could ask if he meant the UEFA Cup final.
The Werder players were surprised with the news from Monday morning that Jürgen Klinsmann was fired as Bayern Munich coach. But it wasn’t that big of an issue for Naldo, Özil & Co. Head coach Thomas Schaaf also wanted to concentrate rather on the task ahead of them this week. About Klinsmann, he only said: “It’s always too bad when a colleague cannot continue their work. Jürgen Klinsmann came in with some big plans. He wanted to move quite a few things. I wish him all the best for the future.“
