Woke up in time after weak first half

Shortly before 5 p.m., Bremen had equalised a two-goal deficit and goal scorer Naldo was celebrating with his team-mates.

Tim Wiese could not believe his eyes. That was surely not the team that sprinted after him and nearly passed him after they won the penalty shoot-out against Hamburg. He could hardly recognise them in the first half against Bochum. All of the cup euphoria and the reception the players - especially the Bremen keeper - received when entering the pitch (chants of "Wiese! Wiese!" came from throughout Weser-Stadion) were gone.

"The first half was the biggest joke I have ever experienced at Bremen. That was refusal to work, that was abysmal. I don't know what we had on our minds. Maybe we thought we were world champions already, but a C-level youth team could have played better. If things would have continued so, the fans would have demanded their money back. Coach was totally correct in really cleaning our heads at the break," said an aggravated Wiese despite the victory.

Just as amazing was the transformation of the team after the intermission. It was a U-turn, a resurrection of Werder football that even grumpy Wiese had to praise. "I really have to give my team-mates credit for how they made up for it in the second half. All of sudden we went out there and just marched forward," added Wiese.

Diego added: "We were missing something in the first half. The coach was very angry but we were also very mad at ourselves. The coach's words helped us for sure, but the reaction following them by the whole team was important. Everyone internalised that we had to give everything we had while wearing the Werder jersey."
