Werder Bermen came back from a two-goal deficit to beat Bochum 3-2 on the 29th game day in front of 40,000 spectators at Weser-Stadion. Stanislav Sestak (16’, 44’) gave the guests a 2-0 in the first half. But Hugo Almeida (55’), Naldo (70’) and Diego (78’) all scored in the second half as Werder turned the game around after the break.
Just three days after an outstanding but energy-sapping victory over Hamburg in the German DFB Cup semi-final, Werder Bremen took the initiative early on. But the Green-Whites were caught off guard after 16 minutes. Marc Pfertzel beat Torsten Frings and passed forward to Sestak, who shot past keeper Tim Wiese from 11 yards to the near right corner and off the inside of the right post.
Werder did not give up after the 1-0 deficit and shrugged off the burden of the last few weeks. But Markus Rosenberg (21’), Alexandros Tziolis (36’) and Diego (43’) were all unable to score the equaliser. And Bochum grabbed the 2-0 lead just before the break. After a Bremen corner in the 44th minute, Christoph Dabrowski started a quick counter-attack to Sestak, who dribbled from his own area past Per Mertesacker and then Tziolis before beating Wiese again for his second goal.
Werder coach Thomas Schaaf’s reaction was to bring in Mesut Özil for the second half. And the move paid off. The German international fed Rosenberg in the 55th minute down the right side and the Swede passed over to Almeida who trimmed the margin to 2-1. Özil helped set up the Bremen equaliser, collecting a pass from Naldo and passing back to the defender, who hit a long blast for the 2-2 score in the 70th minute. And Diego completed the comeback in the 78th minute. Clemens Fritz hit a high ball into the Bochum area and the playmaker collected it, turned and blasted home the 3-2 winner from six yards out.
