Those who observed and listened to Werder players after the game would see that no one on the team sees the Bundesliga as a burdensome necessity. "Every one of us want to win," said Tim Wiese. Clemens Fritz thought of the well-filled Green-White curve in Berlin and said: "There were so many fans here again. We wanted to give them good football." Manager Klaus Allofs was clear in his opinion: "I am really mad. I do not like to lose. And this game meant a lot to me. We had not lost in Berlin in a long time. And we wanted to collect some points again in the Bundesliga and continue our streak."
It was no coincidence that they were all taking about collecting at least one point. Werder after all are always looking for three points. "We don't just give away any game or take them lightly," said Allofs. Bremen actually were on their way to their fourth straight victory in Berlin with 20 minutes left. But two goals by Hertha decided the game. Things did not start that well for Bremen. "We needed some time to get into the match. But that's normal after a game like in Udine," said Torsten Frings. It was important to get through this stage unscathed. And that was the case. "We had them in our grasp and they didn't have a chance against us," added Frings.
Still, in the end it was another defeat. And nearly all Werder personnel were in unison in their description of the reason why: "our own foolishness" (Per Mertesacker), "we were too dim-witted" (Tim Wiese) or "dumb mistakes" (Klaus Allofs). Head coach Thomas Schaaf had a different view. "It was a revival." He referred to the two reasons why Werder too often this season were unable to finish off seemingly-won games. Like Klaus Allofs said, they were careless with their goal chances. And Schaaf said they put themselves in dangerous situations on defence.
