Advancing to the UEFA Cup semi-finals has had personnel consequences for Werder Bremen. "We feel that game a bit more afterwards. And now we have some question marks," said Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf. Before the final UEFA Cup training, the coach listed Petri Pasanen, Naldo, Sebastian Boenisch, Mesut Özil and Diego as five possible candidates to miss the game. Now at least Pasanen and Naldo have been stricken from the list after the final training ahead of the Bundesliga game against Hertha Berlin. "Both were able to practice again and did a good job. They will be on the squad. But the other three are not yet far enough along," said Schaaf.
Going into the game in Berlin, Bremen leadership refuse to change their goals. "We want to win the rest of our games in the Bundesliga. Nothing has changed in that regard," said Werder manager Klaus Allofs. And Schaaf added: "We have a large enough roster to compensate for things. Now others can use the chance to show their creativity. Plus, Hertha are missing three important players as well in Ebert, Friedrich and Voronin."
The Green-Whites also feel they owe it to the Werder fans travelling to Berlin. As in past weeks, some 8,000 Werder supporters are expected in the German capital. And there promises to be an excellent atmosphere with already 65,000 tickets sold for the match.
Bremen travelled to Berlin for the Bundesliga game with the following 17 players: Wiese, Vander, Tosic, Naldo, Tziolis, Mertesacker, Pizarro, Baumann, Almeida, Prödl, Vranjes, Hunt, Rosenberg, Pasanen, Niemeyer, Fritz, Frings.
