Two names were the hot topic of discussion before Werder's departure from Bremen Airport to Triest, near Udine: Diego and Aaron Hunt. The biggest concern was whether the Brazilian Diego could play. And the other player, Hunt, appears to be breaking out of his performance slump.
"I haven't had his muscle in my hands yet, but he should know himself if he can play or not," joked Frank Baumann, after he like all the other Werder players was asked Wednesday morning about Diego's status. Torsten Frings also had to answer questions about his Brazilian team-mate. But he also wasn't able to give much of a medical assessment. "I can only say that I hope that he can play. And if he can't then we will have to get it done without him," said Frings.
Just like all Werder supporters, the team and Bremen management will need plenty of patience regarding Diego. "We will have to wait until just before the game to see if we can line him up. We are hopeful but there is also plenty of doubt," said head coach Thomas Schaaf.
That means the same players are in the spotlight as last weekend. The offensive midfielder Aaron Hunt was a key to the system variation that Schaaf used against Leverkusen with Diego missing. In that match, the 22-year-old Hunt showed improvement in his game. "After a long time out injured, he had been better in training than in games. But against Leverkusen, he showed that he in on a good path to reaching his goals again," said Schaaf.
