Diego was unable to take part in the final training at Weser-Stadion ahead of the UEFA Cup quarter-final return leg at Udinese Calcio as Werder's midfield ace continues to have problems with his right thigh. Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf nonetheless included the Brazilian in the roster which departed for Italy Wednesday morning. "We don't know yet if Diego can play on Thursday. His thigh is better but it's not yet good. So we have to wait and see. But we are hopeful, otherwise we wouldn't bring him with," said Schaaf, who will likely not decide until Thursday if Diego will play.
Diego himself sees his injury as "not serious". "It is a problem though. At the moment I cannot play. We will see if it's better tomorrow," said the 24-year-old. "The game in Udine will be our most important game of the season, and I hope that I can help the team. But I will only play if I am 100 percent fit," said Diego. The Brazilian has been receiving treatment twice a day and doing light bike riding and running exercises.
The following 19 players are making the trip to Udine: Wiese, Vander - Boenisch, Pasanen, Naldo, Fritz, Prödl, Mertesacker - Baumann, Vranjes, Diego, Özil, Hunt, Tziolis, Frings, Niemeyer - Rosenberg, Almeida, Pizarro.
